Dr Jane Elliott

Women’s Health GP

 JANE ELLIOTT

Dr Jane Elliott has been a General Practitioner in Adelaide for many years, with a career-long special interest in Women’s Health, including menopause and premature menopause.

She is a clinical senior lecturer in the Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Adelaide and is involved in teaching medical students and GPs.  She has been an investigator in clinical research trials in all areas of Women’s Health including menopause, contraception, osteoporosis and low libido.

Jane is a Past President of the Australasian Menopause Society and is a member of the Medical and Scientific committee of Healthy Bones Australia.

Jane joined the team at AWARE in 2021 to further focus on her work with women at menopause by providing evidence based information and support on lifestyle changes, menopause hormone replacement (MHT), and non-hormonal options.

She recommends new patients look at the Australasian Menopause Society website (https://www.menopause.org.au/) prior to their appointment with her at AWARE and email in the questionnaire that helps make best use of your initial consultation: Appointment_guide_Menopause_and_midlife.pdf

What to expect during your consultation
With all new patients, Jane starts with an extra long consultation (> 40 minutes) to make sure all aspects of your midlife health are addressed. If you need investigations such as a cervical smear test, mammogram or bone density (DEXA) scan, another consultation may be required. Patients who are just wanting information in order to be prepared for menopause may require only one appointment.

If you start with either hormonal or non-hormonal treatment, Jane will usually ask to see you again at a shorter consultation after 6 weeks and possibly again after 3 months. Beyond that time at least a yearly review at AWARE is recommended to make sure whatever treatment  started is still suitable for your symptoms, health needs and takes into account the latest research. Jane will, if you request it, write back to your usual GP.

Jane believes women at midlife can successfully improve their health and lifestyle and, instead of avoiding or dreading menopause and it’s consequences, can turn it into a positive and empowering time of life.
